Riley and Hall were both seasoned writers and producers with Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative,” and Johnny Kemp’s “Just Got Paid,” taking over the charts in 1988. That same year, Guy signed to legendary music executive Andre Harrell’s label, Uptown Records, and released their self-titled debut album, which went to #1 on the Billboard R&B Chart.
The group quickly gaining popularity thanks to introducing their new jack swing sound, combining traditional soul vocals with hip-hop beats. In 1990 the group released their sophomore album, The Future, which went platinum thanks to hits like “Let’s Chill,” “Wanna Get Wit U,” and “Do Me Right,” featuring Heavy D. The group disbanded after touring the album due to fallout with their manager. Hence, the Hall brothers pursued solo careers, while Teddy Riley produced songs for Michael Jackson and Heavy D and later formed a new group, Blackstreet.
Guy reunited multiple times over the next decade and returned more permanently in 2006 when they joined forces with Blackstreet and New Edition on the New Jack Reunion Tour.
