He studied percussion and piano growing up and joined the percussion section of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 2001. The following year, he was named principal of that same orchestra.
Growing up, Gimeno studied music at Amsterdam Conservatory with an emphasis on conducting. His mentor was renowned conductor Mariss Janson of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Eventually, he became an assistant conductor to Janson. Gimeno also credits Claudio Abbado and Bernard Haitinkas among his other mentors. He gained additional conducting experience with other orchestras in Amsterdam and from 2009 to 2012, worked as the chief conductor for Amsterdam’s Symphonie Orkest Con Brio.
Gimeno has been a principal conductor of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra and has done a plethora of commercial recordings with international orchestras. Finally, he has participated in conducting masterclasses with Ed Spanjaard, Ivan Fischer and Hans Vonk.
