Jeff Gardner decided to make it a musical, enamored by the midwestern backdrop and emotional story. He recruited Neil Berg, composer of the off-Broadway production The Prince and the Pauper, as well as writer and lyricist Nick Meglin, who had been the editor of MAD Magazine.

Enjoy a night of laughter and music with Grumpy Old Men – The Musical tickets. The world premiere of the show was in 2011 at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg, Canada. The show ran from October 13 to November 11 of that year. Six years later, Neil Berg obtained new agreements from the makers of the movie to revive the show. The reworked production ran at the Ogunquit Playhouse in Ogunquit, Maine from August 8 to September 1, 2018.

The new show was well-received critically. A production on the West Coast at The La Mirada Theater for the Performing Arts in Southern California also had success. The show then began to be performed regionally. After this success, the show was classified as a Premier Title, and regional productions were allowed to license and put on performances.
