In the play Phil Connors is sent to the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to film their yearly holiday celebration. Connors feel nothing but contempt for the event and the town, seeing the townspeople as hopelessly quaint and small-minded. His deep cynicism alienates him from his coworkers and life in general, and he is viewed by others as boorish and mean. When Connors wakes up to realize he must relive Groundhog Day over and over again, however, his attitudes begin to change. Over the course of several wildly comedic musical numbers, he comes to realize that he will never escape his predicament until he learns to humble himself.
