The video was picked up by several blogs and websites and caught the attention of TV host Ellen DeGeneres, who invited Chance to perform live at her show on two occasions.
Preceded by the singles “Waiting Outside the Lines” and “Unfriend You,” Hold On ‘til the Night (2011), his studio debut, garnered mixed reviews but somehow managed to peak at Number 29 on the Billboard 200 list, selling more than 16,000 copies in the first week of its release. Following a successful tour throughout Asia, Chance released his first EP, Truth Be Told, Part 1 (2012) via Geffen Records.
He followed up with Somewhere Over My Head (2016), which spawned the single “Afterlife” and was presented at New York’s Webster Hall. In 2017, Chance’s cover of Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes” was featured on the soundtrack of Dirty Dancing’s TV remake. Portraits (2019), his highly-anticipated sophomore effort, signaled a sea change for the singer, ditching the piano-driven ballads of his studio debut and focusing more on contemporary R&B and urban pop music.
