He attended San Diego State University on a football scholarship but that came to an end after an injury. His mom encouraged him to pursue his music before passing away from cancer when Porter was only 21. In 2004, he moved to Brooklyn with his brother and performed at small establishments throughout the city. Under Motema Music and Membran Entertainment group, he released Water in 2010 and Be Good in 2012. This led him to sign to Blue Note Records under Universal Music Group in 2013. He released Liquid Spirit that same year, which resulted in a Grammy Award and certified gold in the UK. Over the next few years, he released albums like Take Me To The Alley, Nat King Cole And Me and All Rise.
