The Flyboys began as the Greeneville Burley Cubs in 1921. They played as a minor league team in the Appalachian League for a number of years before changing their name to the Greeneville Astros in 2004. The Astros acted as the minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros until 2017 when they became the minor league affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds and changed their name to the Greeneville Reds.
When the Appalachian League was revamped in 2021, the Reds were converted into a collegiate summer team and named the Greeneville Flyboys. They take their name from a reference to a historic airfield near their home stadium.
