Green River was formed in 1984 in Seattle with a vision of pushing the boundaries of rock, as many of the members had been playing on and off together since meeting at the Northwest School. They quickly developed a dedicated regional following, releasing their debut EP Come on Down later that year. Come on Down remains seen as the first significant release by a band in the then-nascent grunge rock genre.
In 1986 Green River released their collaborative album Deep Six, which featured a slew of similar acts including Soundgarden, Melvins and The U-Men. Critics continue to regard Deep Six as a formative release for the evolution of grunge and DIY music. The band received the most critical acclaim, however, for their EP Dry as a Bone, which perfected their signature style of heavy metal music mixed with raucous punk elements.
