He attended McGill University in Montreal with the intention of becoming a teacher. While in Montreal, he spent a lot of time DJing shows. Eventually, he dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. In 2015, he began releasing music under the moniker Grandson. He chose this name after his grandfather, with whom he was very close, passed away. Benjamin has said that he chose a name that would give his fans a feeling of nostalgia. His music crosses borders between genres and eras. Some of his musical influences include Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain and John Lennon. His early singles, "Bills", "Things Change" and "Bury Me Face Down" received millions of streams on music platforms. He released the songs "Best Friends" and "Kiss Bang" with RCA Records in 2017. A year later, he signed with the record label Fueled By Ramen and released the hit "Blood // Water.”
