Led and founded by multi-instrumentalist, arranger and composer Gordon Goodwin in 1999, the group is an award winning 18-piece jazz orchestra. Goodwin started the orchestra while working as a composer in Hollywood working on Warner Brothers cartoons, heavily influenced by his childhood idol Count Basie.

The orchestra released their debut album, Swingin’ for the Fences, in 2001 to critical acclaim and would be nominated for two Grammy Awards. They were a hit with fans thanks to their classic big band swing sound infused with jazz fusion and funk influences as heard on their 2003 sophomore album, XXL. The album was nominated for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album at the Grammy’s and featured appearances from Take 6 and incredible musicians including saxophonist Michael Brecker and clarinetist Eddie Daniels. They won big at the awards show in 2015 for the previous year's album, Life in the Bubble, which took home the Large Jazz Ensemble Album and Best Instrumental Arrangement for “On Green Dolphin Street”. Goodwin and the ensemble have continued showing off their jazzy orchestral chops, releasing a new EP, The Reset, in 2021.
