Hansard’s first musical release without The Frames was in 2006. The Swell Season, Hansard’s collaboration with Czech singer and multi-instrumentalist Markéta Irglová, in addition to Marja Tuhkanen on violin and viola and Bertrand Galen on cello. In Once, Hansard plays a Dublin-based busker, and Irglová portrays a Czech immigrant. The musical and romantic chemistry between the two leads garnered Once the Sundance Film Festival World Cinema Audience Award in 2007. The film Once even garnered Hansard an Academy Award in the same year, when the song “Falling Slowly” won “Best Original Song.” A few years later, in 2013, Once won another Grammy for “Best Musical Theater Album,” as it had been adapted into a hit Broadway show by that time.
While Hansard has released ten albums between his work with The Frames and The Swell Season, he has still found time and inspiration to release four albums of solo work.
