Girls Rock Camps are a movement of youth organizations that arose in the 2000s following the success of the original Girls Rock Camp in Portland, Ore. Girls Rock Camps are non-profit organizations that strive to empower girls from the ages of eight to 18 through music. The camps generally provide an opportunity for attendees to learn instruments, form bands, compose original songs and perform in front of a live audience. 

Misty McElroy founded the first Girls Rock Camp in Portland as part of her senior project as a women’s studies major at Portland State University. In the years since, Girls Rock Camps have been established in nearly every major US city, as well as in countries as varied as Brazil, Canada and the United Arab Emirates. Camp leadership exchanges ideas and information by way of a governing body known as the Girls Rock Camp Alliance, which meets every year. 

Due to the success of the project, the camps have been featured prominently in film and on television. Most notably, the movement was the subject of the 2007 and 2012 documentaries Girls Rock! and Hit So Hard. Snag Girls Rock Camp tickets today to see the next generation of rockers perform.
