When Smith passed away the group suddenly needed a new lead vocalist, and Alston stepped up to the plate. It was his unique voice and musical interpretations that led The Manhattans at last to widespread success. As the decade advanced his one-of-a-kind voice saw The Manhattans release several top ten songs across both the pop and R&B charts. Alston's 1988 debut solo album, Gerald Alston, peaked at No. 18 on the Soul/R&B Billboard Album Chart and remained on the chart for 33 weeks. In addition, the album featured multiple charting singles, including "I Can't Tell You Why" and "You Laid Your Love On Me." Gerald Alston furthered his mounting success in 1990 with Open Invitation, which peaked at No. 14 on the Soul/R&B Billboard Album Chart. Additionally, the album included two top 10 Soul/R&B chart hits, "Slow Motion" and "Getting Back Into Love."
Gerald Alston released two more charting albums in the 1990s, Always in the Mood and First Class Only, both featuring multiple charting tracks. His fifth solo album, Gerald Alston Sings Sam Cooke, was released in 2008. In 2013, 2018, and 2020, Alston toured with famous artists Tyson and Mays on The Soul Train Cruises.
