George Benson started his music career playing ukulele in a drug store when he was seven and a year later he was playing guitar in unlicensed nightclubs. He was just 10 when he recorded his first single She Makes Me Mad but during his teens, he was consumed by jazz. Benson teamed up with organist Jack McDuff and was 21 when he recorded The New Boss Guitar, his first album with his own band. His quartet became widely respected in jazz circles and Benson went on to play guitar with Miles Davis, playing on his 1968 album Miles In The Sky, and then branched out to encompass Beatles and Jefferson Airplane covers.

His big crossover, however, came with the 1976 album, Breezin', which featured vocals for the first time and became the first jazz album in history to achieve platinum sales. Benson toured with singer Minnie Riperton and enjoyed even greater success with the Quincy Jones-produced pop album Give Me The Night, scoring a major crossover hit with the title track. He also had major success with the original version of The Greatest Love Of All, collaborated with Chet Atkins and Al Jarreau and continues to represent the popular face of jazz.
