Geno’s father John Delafose was also a zydeco accordionist, and Geno got his start in performing at the age of eight when he joined his father’s band as a rubboard player. As he got older, Geno picked up the accordion and began to perform as the opening act for his father’s band. Thanks to his unique take on the Louisiana-born genre of zydeco, Geno is credited as one of the creators of the nouveau zydeco sound.
