The guitarist and songwriter George Edward Smith, better known by his initials G.E., is best known as the long-time leader of the Saturday Night Live Band. He also was the lead guitarist for the rock duo Hall & Oates from 1979 to 1985.

Smith was born January 27, 1952, in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and began to play guitar at the age of four. He was given a C.F. Martin guitar at the age of seven. He received a Fender Telecaster at the age of 11. He began to perform professionally in his teens.

Smith moved to New Haven Connecticut and while performing in the group The Scratch Band, he met Dan Hartman, working with him on his album Instant Replay and the single “Instant Replay” spawned off that album and toured with Hartman throughout Europe and the United States.

He then moved to Manhattan and played guitar for Gilda Radner in her broadway show Gilda Live in 1979. He then joined the band for Hall & Oates from 1979 to 1985. Smith’s first solo album, In the World, was recorded with Paul Simon and Howard Shore doing backup singing.
