GMCW’s debut performance occurred that September at the opening of the National Gay Task Force’s Washington office. They were invited by DC Mayor Marion Barry and performed a three-song set. By March 1982, the Chorus booked its first full-length non-holiday concert and performed 13 songs at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill. More than four decades later, the GMCW has more than 250 members in five ensembles working to encourage equality and inclusion in the country’s capital. They average more than 125 outreach performances a year and almost 5,000 volunteer outreach hours. Some of their most high-profile performances have included HRC National Dinner, the National Transgender March for Visibility and the We Are One: The Obama Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. The group also performed at the Kennedy Center Honors in 2010 alongside Broadway legends Carol Channing and Angela Lansbury.
