Born in New York City in 1948, Trudeau began drawing at an early age. He later studied art at Yale University, where he contributed cartoons to the university’s publications The Yale Record and The Yale Daily News. He then earned an advanced degree in graphic design from the Yale School of Art.
Trudeau’s cartoon Bull Tales from The Yale Daily News attracted the attention of the Universal Press Syndicate, who began nationally syndicating the cartoon under the new name Doonesbury. Doonesbury’s scathing political commentary earned the cartoonist a Pulitzer Prize in 1975, and he would become a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1990, 2004 and 2005 as well. In 1977, Trudeau created A Doonesbury Special, for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film.
