The event signifies the start of the NHL season and originally took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. In addition to playing the Avalanche, the Kings also occasionally faced other opponents as part of the Frozen Fury tradition including the San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers and Arizona Coyotes. The original Frozen Fury tradition ended after the 2016 matchup with the LA Kings leading all other participating teams with 12 Frozen Fury victories.
In the summer of 2021, it was announced that Frozen Fury would return as part of the NHL preseason in September. The 2021 matchup will feature the LA Kings hosting the Vegas Golden Knights in Salt Lake City, Utah. Vivint Arena will host the 2021 game and signed a contract to also host the event in 2022 and 2023. Vivint Arena has previously been home to minor league hockey teams and will now see the two Pacific Division rivals face off on the ice.
