The band refers to its style of music as electronic body music, a genre of electronic music that combines sequenced repetitive basslines, programmed dance music rhythms and undistorted vocals with confrontational themes.
Front 242 features members Jean-Luc De Meyer, Patrick Codenys, Richard Jonckheere and Tim Kroker. The band formed near Leuven, Belgium. Former members Daniel Bressanutti and Dirk Bergen aspired to make music and graphic design using electronic tools. The duo’s first single “Principles,” supported by the B-side “Body to Body,” dropped in 1981. Initial recordings were created in Bressanutti’s apartment studio, with equipment packed into a 2.5 x 2.5m room.
Underviewer, a group formed separately by Codenys and De Meyr merged with Bressanutti and Bergen, birthing the present day, Front 242 lineup. The band seeks to project an anonymous and mysterious image, setting foot on stages while wearing dark sunglasses and militaristic uniforms. Oddly, Bressanutti took such anonymity to extreme measures, often disappearing to run live shows from the soundboard behind the audience. Altogether, the band has released eight studio albums.
