The play consists of a series of poetic monologues delivered in tandem with music and choreography. The piece explores the trials and tribulations of seven African-American women as they navigate both racism and sexism in American society. 

The protagonists of the play are nameless, identified only by the color of the clothes they wear. Their monologues are made up of 20 poems Shange wrote tackling issues of abandonment, sisterhood and domestic violence, among many others. The poems often make use of vernacular language to draw attention to the ways in which culture affects our ability to understand others. 

Shange first performed her play herself at a bar in Berkeley, California before moving to New York City to continue revising the piece. In 1976 For Colored Girls opened at the Booth Theatre, one of the first plays written by a female African-American playwright to make it to Broadway.
