They began calling themselves Megatron. After the group grew to a sextet, the Fishbone name was adopted. Their music contains a variety of genres including ska and punk which were on the rise in Los Angeles during the 1980s. Their first live performance as Fishbone was at Madame Wong’s in Los Angeles’s Chinatown. From there, they formed friendships with other alternative bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Thelonious Monster.
Fishbone’s 1988 album Truth and Soul marked a shift in the group’s sound. While many of their ska and funk influences remained, Truth and Soul brought a guitar-driven focus on rock and soul. It’s widely considered to be Fishbone’s big break. It reached number 153 on the Billboard 200 chart. The follow-up album The Reality of My Surroundings debuted at number 49 on the Billboard 200 in 1991. The singles “Sunless Saturday” and “Everyday Sunshine” each peaked at number 7 and 14 respectively on the US Modern Rock charts.
