The team plays its home games at the 11,000 seat Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.  The team colors are red, white and navy.

The team was founded in 2016 to replace the Evansville IceMen, who had moved to Owensboro, Kentucky, which had played in the East Coast Hockey League, or ECHL.  A season ticket holder, Mike Hall secured a five-year lease for the Thunderbolts to play at the Ford Center. Hall also announced he would be the general manager while VW Sports LLC owned the franchise.

The team name was announced on April 15, 2016. The name was taken from the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft, which had been manufactured in Evansville during the Second World War. The first head coach was Jeff Pyle. In 2017 Mike Hall was replaced as General Manager by Pete Xander.  Pyle was replaced by former NHL player Ian Moran two years later. Jeff Bes would take over for Moran in 2019.
