Born in Philadelphia in 1970, Owens showed an interest in music at a young age. He began learning to play piano at six years old, then as a teenager studied the oboe under Philadelphia Orchestra musician Louis Rosenblatt. As a young man, he turned to singing, training at the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University. He later earned an advanced degree from Philadelphia’s prestigious Curtis Institute of Music.
Owens then set off on his professional career in earnest, performing with a number of leading groups including the Los Angeles Opera, the Metropolitan Opera and the London Symphony Orchestra.
