His uncle taught him how to write songs and Lapointe was touring Quebec and France by the time he was fifteen years old. He was discovered by Yves-François Blanchet and began playing at local bars and colleges. Lapointe wrote his first hit single "N'importe quoi" in 1989. After putting on a showcase at Club Soda, he was offered a record contract by Disques Gamma. The label helped him release his debut album Obsession in 1994, which was later certified platinum. He opened for the Rolling Stones the following year as part of the Voodoo Lounge Tour. His next four albums, Invitez les Vautours, À l'ombre de l'ange, Adrénaline and Coupable would all become  certified platinum as well. In 2009 Lapointe released the album Ailleurs, Volume 1, which featured multiple stars including Céline Dion. In 2011 he collaborated with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra to put out Lapointe Symphonique. He has frequently appeared as a judge on the Quebec version of the hit show The Voice. In total, Lapointe has won nine Félix Awards since 1995—three of which have been for Best Rock Album. He has also won the Public Choice Award twice at the Quebec City Summer Festival, once in 1997 and then again in 2000. Lapointe has had nearly 30 number one hits on the Quebec charts and he continues to tour.
