They began playing together casually in 2003 and didn’t play their first show until 2005. After playing various shows for a year, Envy on the Coast gained the attention of producer Bryan Russell in 2006 and subsequently signed a record deal with Photo Finish Records. In 2007 they released their first full-length album Lucy Gray and the band started to gain popularity. With the release of that first album, they also released two successful music videos.
From 2007 to 2010 the band toured and continued to write music until in the middle of 2010 they abruptly announced they would no longer be playing together and were parting ways. Envy on the Coast played three farewell shows in August of 2010 but then dissolved for what they thought would be the final time. However, after several years apart, Envy on the Coast announced in 2016 a reincarnation tour. What was originally supposed to just be a simple tour, turned into a full-fledged reunion of the band. In 2017 they announced their first headlining tour which celebrated the tenth anniversary of their first album Lucy Gray.
As the years go on, Envy on the Coast is stronger than ever and continues to release music and schedule tours. Their influence on the rock scene is undeniable and their fans have stuck around for all the ups and downs that the band has experienced over the years.
