Macias’ music is known to many as Chanson music, a unique genre that has origins in monophonic melodies sung by troubadours. Although Macias initially pursued a career as a schoolteacher, music remained a part of his life from an early age.
The tumultuous Algerian War of Independence became a cause for concern. His father-in-law, Cheikh Raymond, a renowned musician, was assassinated in 1961. Following his father-in-law’s tragic assassination, Macias determined it was too dangerous to remain in his hometown and left the education field to pursue his passion for writing heartfelt and meaningful songs. Macias and his wife sought asylum in France for eleven months shy of the end of the Algerian War. He settled in scenic Paris, where he began learning the language and eventually performed in local cafes and cabarets.
Macias has opened for Les Compagnos de la Chanson at Paris Olympia and later toured throughout much of the Middle East, including Israel, Greece and Turkey. In the U.S. he sold out the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York and continued to tour throughout popular cities, among them Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles.
