Born in Lviv in 1949, he began learning to play piano at six years old under the tutelage of his father. He later moved to Poland with his family, where he continued his studies at the Miodowa School. As a young man, he spent time in Canada performing with the Junior Musical Club of Winnipeg, then moved to New York City to train at the Juilliard School under Mieczysław Munz. 

Ax first rose to mainstream attention in 1970, when he earned an honorable mention at Warsaw’s International Chopin Piano Competition. He further cemented his place in the scene in 1973, when he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. That same year the pianist began collaborating with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and the pair would go on to give frequent recitals together until the early 2000s. For a number of years, Ax performed in a quartet with Ma, Jaime Laredo and Isaac Stern.
