Many compared Elton John’s performance style in his youth to that of Jerry Lee Lewis. John grew up in Pinner, Middlesex with his parent’s who first exposed him to music. His father, Stanley Dwight, was a trumpet player for a professional big band called the Bob Millar Band, which performed for military dances. John’s parents had an impressive collection of rock and roll records which exposed John to singers and musicians who pushed against the restrictive ideals held by his family. John often sites the influence of Elvis Presley and Little Richard for helping him develop his own performance style.
John began his professional music training at 11 when he began attending the Royal Academy of Music. He left the academy at 17 to explore a career in music. In 1967, John began working with lyricist, Bernie Taupin, whom he still works with today. With Taupin’s help, John released his first album, Elton John, in April 1970. The album was a smashing success with songs “Your Song” and “Take Me to the Pilot”. It hit number four on the US Billboard 200 and five on the UK album Chart. Elton John tickets went on sale for his first US concert at the Troubadour in Las Angeles.
Elton John continued to gain worldwide fame with his chart-topping album Honky Château, which featured hit songs “Rocket Man” and “Honky Cat”. From here, John’s success continued to grow over the years. John’s 30 studio albums have gone on the accumulate over 300 million records worldwide. His impressive music style and high energy performance have won numerous awards. Including multiple Grammy, Tony and Golden Globe awards.
Recently Elton John has continued his legendary streak of performative excellence through ventures in film and theatre. Most notably he was the subject of the 2019 biopic Rocketman, for which he netted the best original song Oscar, and he wrote a majority of the music for the Lion King Broadway play.
