The group is a bass-driven, math-rock band from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, comprised of KT Chang on bass, Tell Chang on guitar and Chia-Chin Tu on drums. As kids, KT and Tell Chang were trained in classical music by their mother, while Chia-Chin Tu learned classical percussion. After the siblings met Tu at a music club in high school, the trio bonded over their shared love with the experimental sounds of post-rock and math-rock, leading to their formation of Elephant Gym in February 2012.
Elephant Gym tickets would quickly sell out among university students in their hometown of Kaohsiung and later became a hot commodity elsewhere as the group made their way through the independent music scene in Taiwan by playing at large-scale festivals such as Formoz, Mega Port Festival and Simple Life. The music of the band became renown for their prominent bass lines, exciting guitar riffs and melodic drumming, with most of their songs being purely instrumental. Although math-rock is a traditionally technical, intricate and somewhat high-energy genre, the Taiwanese trio employs an infectiously groovy and dreamy interpretation that creates their own brand of the genre.
The three members also stood out because unlike most math-rock bands, they made the uncommon decision to use the bass as the leading instrument, rather than the standard choice of the guitar. In their minds, however, this was an easy decision considering their confidence in KT’s skills as a bassist, a talent that they decided should be highlighted as much as possible.
