James Oppenheim, known on stage as Boney James, who headlined the Easter Jazz Spectacular in 2019, is a saxophonist, songwriter, producer and in-demand session musician. James started playing at the age of eight, first with the clarinet and then pivoting to saxophone at the age of ten. He moved to Florida at the age of 14 and cut his teeth professionally in a fusion band that was a supporting act for acts such as Flora Purim and the Yellowjackets. His first solo album, Trust, was released in 1992.

He moved to Kansas City, Kan., at a young age with his family and was raised in the Kansas City area. He first picked up his brother’s guitar at the age of eight, infatuated with the music of artists such as Jimi Hendrix and the Isley Brothers. His first album, Just Between Us, was released in 1992.
