James got his start opening local shows for his friends' band after finally having some of his own material to perform, and hasn’t slowed down since. He carefully crafted his sound with elements of blues, folk, rock and classic country as he pulled from Birmingham’s diverse music scene. James was soon discovered by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach who asked the songwriter to help produce his debut solo album. In 2018, he released his own first EP, Early James and the Latest, before eventually signing to Auerbach’s label, Easy Eye Sound. On the label he released his debut album, Singing for My Supper, in 2020 featuring the popular singles “Blue Pill Blues” and “It Doesn’t Matter Now”. The album featured songs co-written with Auerbach as well as renowned writers like John Bettis and Ronnie Bowman.
