By nine he had begun learning to play the cello as well, then in 1999 moved with his family to Canada. He played in the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra before starting training at the Curtis Institute of Music at 16. During his time at the institute, he was mentored by Peter Wiley and Orlando Cole. He later earned an advanced degree in cello performance from the Juilliard School.
At 24 years old, Lee was diagnosed with focal dystonia. The condition caused involuntary muscle movements and greatly hampered his ability to play the cello. Lee turned to conducting instead, earning an advanced degree in conducting from the Manhattan School of Music.
In 2015 Lee became the resident conductor for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, where he served for three years. He currently serves as associate conductor for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and in 2021 was appointed assistant conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well.
