When the DSO began, it was led by Music Director and Conductor Dr. Parviz Mahmoud, the former conductor of the Tehran Symphony. Under his expert guidance, the DSO grew in both size and prestige over the years until his retirement in 1985. Since then, its number of yearly concerts has increased from five to twenty-seven in 1992. It has built connections in the community, brought in new musicians and expanded into chamber music and educational concerts.
