Nick Urata, Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder and Shawn King originally performed as a backing band for burlesque performances and toured with burlesque model, Dita Von Teese. The band name Devotchka is taken from the Russian word for “girl,” which lines up with the group’s origin.

Devotchka’s original success came as a result of old-fashioned hard work. With a musical style influenced by folk as well as world music, the band earned fans by self-releasing music and touring independently to bring it to new listeners. Their song “How It Ends” helped Devotchka gain notoriety when the track was used in a video game ad for Gears of War II, a trailer for Everything is Illuminated and an episode of Everwood.

Between 2000 and 2018, Devotchka released seven studio albums, as well as a number of EPs, live performance albums, and movie compilation soundtracks.
