Barber was born in 1983 in Winnipeg, and began writing his first songs and playing in bands as a teenager. His style would be heavily influenced by his childhood idols Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
In 2009 Barber released his debut LP Where the City Ends. Despite his misgivings about whether the album would be a success, Where the City Ends would earn a nod for Roots Solo Album of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. Barber’s successes continued, as his sophomore album, Love Songs of the Last 20 earned that year’s Juno Award nomination for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. Later in 2011 Barber secured his first wins with the Western Canadian Music Awards for Roots Solo Recording of the Year and Independent Album of the Year.
