The band was created in 1989 when the members decided they wanted to make heavy metal music more intense and aggressive than what had come before. They first grew their fan base by passing out show flyers by hand and developed a following among metal fans despite a sound that pushed the boundaries of the genre. Dead Heat recorded a series of demos in 1990 that got them signed to Rising Sun Records, through which they released their first album The Feast Begins at Dawn. The release saw the band begin touring the Netherlands alongside similar acts like Invocator and Malevolent Creation.
Dead Heat released Dream Deceiver in 1993, but it would take until their third album for the group to arrive at their signature sound. Kill Division, released in 1999, was recorded live and with little post-production. The album’s raw, fast style earned the group a reputation as a cutting-edge band in new metal music, and they continued to release albums slowly and with intention.
