DCI provides a standard rules set for competitions that are hosted throughout the United States and Canada.

The highlight of the DCI schedule is the Drum Corps International World Championships held annually at Lucas Oil Stadium. The inaugural event was held in 1972 and was won by the Anaheim Kingsmen. Since that time, the world championships have expanded to multiple classes of competition. The World Class is the premier division of competition in DCI and has mostly been dominated by four drums and bugle corps, the Blue Devils, The Cadets, The Cavaliers and the Santa Clara Vanguard.
