Zinman was born in Brooklyn in 1936 and studied the violin at Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory. He continued his studies at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a graduate degree in composition and music theory. Zinman served as a conductor at Tanglewood in the late ’50s and early ’60s, then was mentored by famed conductor Pierre Monteux.

In 1965, he was the second conductor for the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, a post Zinman held for twelve years. He went on to become chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic in the late ’70s and early ’80s. Zinman was the music director of both the Rochester Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, and recorded several landmark pieces with the latter. His 1992 recording of Gorecki’s Symphony No. 3 with the London Sinfonietta would become an international bestseller.
