In addition to singing, Simonett also played guitar and harmonica in the band. Trampled by Turtles' fifth release, Palomino, spent 52 straight weeks in the Top 10 on the Bluegrass charts.
In 2017, Simonett started work on the side project Dead Man Winter with Trampled by Turtles bandmate Tim Saxhaug and other friends from the Minneapolis rock scene. They released their first album, Furnace, that year and followed it with 2011's Bright Lights. He returned to Trampled by Turtles for Life is Good on the Open Road in 2018.
Simonett recorded and released his first full-length album under his own name in 2020. It was titled Red Tail and served as a departure from his earlier work, featuring long guitar solos and candid moments between Simonett Don House (guitar), Al Church (bass) and Lars-Erik Larson (drums and piano). The four recorded the album in just five days. With songs that split the line between country and indie, Dave Simonett tickets are sure to please any crowd no matter who he tours with.
