The Otterbots began as the Danville Braves in 1993, and enjoyed considerable success in the Appalachian League. In 2006 the Braves defeated the Elizabethton Twins in an upset victory to claim the Appalachian League championship. It was an accomplishment they would repeat in 2009, when they again defeated the Twins to claim the championship.
When the Appalachian League was reorganized in 2021, the Braves were converted from a minor league team to a collegiate summer team. They took the name of the Danville Otterbots, and repopulated their roster with rising college athletes. Their new name came by way of a fan selection contest. The Otterbots have enjoyed success since their reformation, posting a 29-24 record at the end of the 2021 season.
