It brings together vocalists Tilian Pearson and Jon Mess, bassist Tim Feerick, drummer Matthew Mingus, and guitarist Will Swan. A first EP, Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean, cemented the nascent project that same year and was reissued in 2006 after signing with Rise Records. The contract continues with Downtown Battle Mountain, produced by Kris Crummett, who will follow the training throughout his career. The group then forged a solid stage reputation under the tutoring of Alesana, A Day to Remember, and Pierce the Veil, whom they accompanied on the tour.
The first guitarist, Sean O’Sullivan, is the first to leave the adventure, giving way to Zachary Garren. In 2007, it was the turn of the original singer, Jonny Craig, to throw in the towel, after an argument with the manager. Several singers are auditioned, including Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens, but the job goes to Kurt Travis. It is under this line-up that the group enters the studio and records the second, eponymous album. But the troubles are not over so far, since, just after the session, two members resign in turn: the two singers, Jon Mess and Eric Lodge.
Will Swan takes over while providing guitar, while Jason Ellis of Five Minute Ride takes on the four-string. With a somewhat ironic title given these successive twists of fate, Happiness appears in 2009. And the musical chairs continue, with Zachary Garren, the guitarist, who has to leave the group for incompatibility of mood. He would form the math-rock group Strawberry Girls soon after. A surprise never arriving alone, the group strengthens with two well-known heads, since it is Jon Mess and Eric Lodge who reappeared in 2010, Kurt Travis, meanwhile, left his position in favor of Jonny Craig ( who returns for two short years, before finally leaving the microphone to his replacement)… Josh Benton, former partner of Kurt Travis in No Not Constant, will provide him with the guitar. In the midst of all this turmoil, the group still manages to give birth to a series of high-value albums, Acceptance Speech (2015), Instant Gratification (2015), Mothership (2016), or Artificial Selection (2018). Dance Gavin Dance then released a remastered version of Acceptance Speech in 2019 before releasing in April 2020 its ninth discographic effort, Afterburner.
