Cooper started to play at a local coffeehouse in Kansas City at the age of 13. Though awarded scholarships, he dropped out of college to pursue music as his career. In the 1970s, Cooper relocated to Los Angeles with the express purpose of recording a solo album with the record label Elektra Records. His self-titled album, Dana Cooper, was released in 1973.

The two collaborated on writing, performing and recording and formed the Shake Russell/Dana Cooper band, which played in the Houston club circuit. The band released three albums and appeared on the show Austin City Limits.
Cooper then formed his own three-piece indie rock band, called DC3. The group’s first single, “Give Us the Money,” in 1983, as well as a self-titled album in 1985 and the album Perpetual Man in 1986. In 1987, the name was changed to Nuclear Family. In 1998, Cooper moved to Nashville, Tennesse to pursue his solo career.
