Bern released his self-titled debut album in 1997, and his early songs often featured humorous lyrics poking fun at his various musical influences. As time went on Bern’s work became more explicitly political, offering both progressive and surreal commentary. In 2007 his album Breathe won the Independent Music Award for Best Folk/Singer-Songwriter Album. In the 2010’s Bern played with the LA rock band Common Rotation and was prominently featured on their album Live in Los Angeles. Bern also wrote the majority of the songs for the musical comedy film Walk Hard. He has written multiple novels including Cleaver the Gronk and Quitting Science, and is an accomplished painter.
