She learned the violin when she was young, going on to study music at the Tampere Conservatory and later the Sibelius Academy. She also became the first woman to be made chief conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra in 2020, the same year she won the Conductor Award from the Royal Philharmonic Society.
