Cut Copy started as the solo project of Dan Whitford in 2001 after he completed his studies. Based out of Melbourne, Victoria, Austria, Whitford used his interest in synth dance music along with his graphic design degree to start building his sound and his brand. Whitford produced Cut Copy’s first album in 2001 I Thought of Numbers from his home studio with help from friends.

After a successful initial release Cut Copy tickets rose in popularity and Whitford built out the rest of the band adding Tim Hoey (guitar) and Mitchell Scott (drums). The band produced their debut full-length album Bright Like Neon Love in 2004. The album’s success would pale in comparison to their follow-up 2008s In Ghost Colours. It would debut at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart and the single “Lights & Music” was featured in the game FIFA 09. The Cut Copy sound is heavily synth-focused with elements of disco, new wave and house. In 2011, Cut Copy released their third full-length album entitled Zonoscope.
