The genres that they have played in over the years are quite diverse, running the gamut from all types of rock and punk to country blues and Bakersfield sound. Bakersfield is a form of country with rock and roll influences including strong electric guitars and a pounding drumbeat. Other Cracker members have consisted of Bryan Howard on bass guitar, Matt "Pistol" Stoessel on pedal steel guitar and drummer Carlton "Coco" Owens.
The band has released numerous recordings including multiple singles, EPs, live albums, compilation albums and studio LPs. Their debut studio full-length album, Cracker, released in 1992, spawned a couple of singles that were charted, “Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now)” which made it to #1 on the U.S. Modern Rock chart, and “Happy Birthday To Me” which topped out at #13 on the same chart. David Lowery and Johnny Hickman have also had individual solo projects including Lowery’s debut album in 2011 titled The Palace Guards, and a few years earlier Hickman had released his debut LP, Palmhenge. Over the years, Cracker has extensively toured across the United States at standard concert venues and festivals including the Pleasantville Music Festival, Changeville and the Gulfport Music Festival.
