The band was founded in 1998 by Brandon Morgan and Jason Hammil, who was attending Middle Tennessee State University at the time. When the band first formed, it displayed a punk rock aesthetic. They released their debut album, Demo Schmemo, in 1998. When drummer and vocalist Mark Nicks joined the band, the band’s sound changed, becoming more emotive and expressive, with more introspective lyrics

The group signed with Floodgate Records in 2002. Through Floodgate Records, the band released the album Wake Up, O Sleeper in 2003. In 2004, the band released its follow-up album, The Fires of Life. Nicks then played drums for the band Chariot while the band went on hiatus.
