Throughout his youth, Mead was playing music with his family and local bands touring in Kansas and Missouri. In the early ‘90s, he moved to Nashville where he would meet fellow singer/songwriter Gary Bennett and form BR5-49 (named after the comedy bit on the country music TV show Hee Haw). Once building a name for themselves in Nashville the band would go on to record six studio albums and be nominated for a Grammy three times. Their style included rockabilly, honky-tonk, country roots and straight-up rock’n’roll, and was known for their outstanding live performances. Most popular songs include “Cherokee Boogie,” “Even if it’s Wrong,” and “Little Ramona (Gone Hillbilly Nuts).”

Along with his successful performing career, Mead has also been a producer for numerous albums including tributes to Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings. He was a producer and supervisor for the CMT television show Sun Records. Along with those credits, he was also the Musical Supervisor/Director for the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet.
