Christian Death was founded in 1979 by Rozz Williams and Rikk Agnew of The Adolescents, releasing their debut album Only Theatre of Pain three years later. The release was both a commercial and critical success, and heavily influenced future star bands like 45 Grave and Kommunity FK. The band’s strong anti-authoritarian themes, dark aesthetic and controversial stand against organized religion made them one of the most significant groups in the then-nascent gothic rock genre.
Despite a slew of lineup changes following Only Theatre of Pain’s release, Christian Death continued to tour and record, releasing the widely praised Catastrophe Ballet and Ashes in 1984 and 1985, respectively. The band’s signature sound blends hard rock and art-punk elements and often relies on lyrics filled with shock value and rejections of conventional morality.
